Newborn Intensive Care

Newborn Intensive Care

$535.00

The Children’s Health Ministries NICU cares for some of the most fragile babies in Haiti: premature, low birth weight, and critically ill newborns. Only 1 in 10 babies in the poorest areas of Haiti (like Carrefour) are delivered by a skilled birthing attendant, and most are delivered at home. Due to this, many babies experience birth trauma and oxygen deprivation at birth. Little to no prenatal care and maternal malnutrition contribute to other frequent complications, including a high maternal-fetal infection rate and infants born at low birth weight (below 2.5 kg or 5.5 pounds). We also frequently receive neonatal referrals from hospitals in Carrefour and beyond, usually due to a lack of adequate supplies and medical staff.

Give life to a premature baby this Christmas! Your gift of $535 will provide life-saving care to a premature or critically-ill baby!

*Scroll down for a story of Beverly, a premature baby whose life was saved in our NICU!

Beverly

Baby Beverly was born 13 weeks too early, weighing just 2 pounds. Her body temperature at admission was 7 degrees below normal (91.4!) and her blood sugar was dangerously low. Beverly’s mother, Lozana, told us later that she was sure in that moment that her daughter was going to die – there was no way that she could be that tiny, lifeless, and cold and still survive.
After 33 days in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lozana and Beverly went home. Lozana said at a follow-up visit with Beverly, who is now 4 months old, “You gave me my daughter back that I thought I had lost. After thanking God, I will never stop saying thank you to you for that.”
